Based on the original Swan Lake (the original Tchaikovsky version, not the much better known Petipa revival), Ekman was interested in taking a fresh look at the initial failure of the now-famous ballet.
This is no faithful reproduction however. Ekman's amazing vision has brought together fabulous dancers with a unique "lake" in which to dance. Below is a short film of one of their first "water rehearsals".
Add to that the talent of Henrik Vibskov, the Danish fashion designer, who has created a mix of sculptural dresses and flowing costumes that are designed to look striking wet or dry.

Of course, this isn't the first time Swan Lake has been beautifully re-imagined in the past couple of years. Black Swan, with the amazing costume design by Rodarte, was an amazing film adaptation, and one of those films you could very nearly watch on mute just for the gorgeous cinematography.
Productions such as this are a fantastic reminder of what is possible when truly talented creatives join forces. Are there any collaborations that you love, or a costume designer that you feel brought something special to a performance? Let me know in the comments!
